I don't agree with all you say, but it's better like so: in Orphans are a lot of different ways, sound, meanings, and is sure that different people could find different feelings. I don't think is the best TW's work, some song is similar to an other, but Orphans is so full of life that I love it the most. We agree 100% on "Bottom of the world": I've read a lot of negative reviews: is easy, trivial, with nothing new... Maybe is true, but inside that "easy" song I've found a world I never finish to find out.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32463346.post-4209991305748089372007-04-14T15:33:00.000-04:002007-04-14T15:33:00.000-04:00Little Son Jackson was the real name of a Texas Bl...Little Son Jackson was the real name of a Texas Bluesman...very worth checking out. Great album works very well as an intro album to TW. Believe it or not, I made an induction to TW pack for a friend - ie a mixed tape that had 2/3 of what eventually ended up as the Orphans, stuff that was released one way or another that is.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32463346.post-86649349404693625972007-01-09T19:51:00.000-05:002007-01-09T19:51:00.000-05:00Wow! I haven't seen many reviews of Orphans where the reviewer devoted time to going track by track.

Road to Peace -
Nope, there is nothing as overtly topical as this song on any previous record. It's so plainly written and not his usual style. I really like it.

Rains on Me, Goodnight Irene - The background vocals and chorus of singers on each is Waits himself. Rains on Me is kinda similar to Cold Water from Mule Variations; it sounds like there is a backup vocalist but it's just him harmonizing with himself.

Bone Chain is very much like Let Me Get Up On It from Bone Machine. That song is less than a minute and the next to last track; at first I felt like it disrupted the flow but now think it's as indispensible as the rest of Bone Machine.

I agree that Missing My Son is hilarious all the way through, and the laugh is perfect. Really leaves you with a smile.

By the by, the Tom Waits Library is an excellent source for finding background information on these songs. (tomwaitslibrary.com)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
